Growing up in a Gujarati household, I have memories of using Godhadis in the winter — bringing back memories of my grandmother’s village home, and my babies rolling around in these meticulously hand stitched quilts. During a workshop conducted in 2021 by Anitha Reddy and Suresh Jayaram, I had the opportunity of interacting with the Siddi community of Karnataka, and learning from them the art of Kavandi quilting.
The pandemic taught me to let go of control, and put faith in others — resulting in one of many collaborations. Working with motifs that record glimpses of moments from my past two years, the food we ate, the birds we saw, the garden chair we spent so much time on, these patchwork quilts were put together by me and then worked on by the Siddi women.
