A dark cloud looming over us all, the larger than life mask represents death, sickness, and weight that we have all felt collectively. During a workshop conducted in 2021 by Anitha Reddy and Suresh Jayaram, I had the opportunity of interacting with the Siddi community of Karnataka, and learning from them the art of Kavandi quilting. The pandemic taught me to let go of control, and put faith in others — resulting in one of many collaborations. Working with motifs that record glimpses of moments from my past two years, the food we ate, the birds we saw, the garden chair we spent so much time on, these patchwork quilts were put together by me Pull becomes a way for me to express the constant tug that I feel between my art practice and my role in the home and family. While each half of the diptych is complete in its own way, the combining of the halves results in a ‘whole’ picture — one that is impossible to comprehend when either half is seen alone. part of my daily practice. Inspired by nature, travel, and art, the lines represent my day-to-day interactions, emotional ups and downs, the role of specific people in my life, and moments that stayed with me. We are constantly surrounded by noise and distractions, accentuated by the constant intervention of technology and virtuality. Through these drawings, I choose to focus on and recreate the simplicity of the world — capturing the essence of each day, while muting the noise that is often hard to ignore. This series — which shifts from pages in a book, A3 sheets, and the digital space — was a first for me in terms of a sustained engagement for such a duration of time. is a site-specific wall mural (done at my solo show with the same name, at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery in 2017) that uses the pattern of a broken line. What initially started as an engagement with folk art motifs — particularly Gond — the broken line became a way for me to find a pattern that I could relate to and call my own. Rendering this pattern more and more, the resonance it has with the running stitch became evident. Looking back at my own upbringing and interaction with Gujarati Godhadis, I began to realise that for me the running stitch had stayed with me as a pattern — one that is both forgiving in its form and essential in the role it plays.
